Judith Ellis Knows Jazz

Judith Ellis Jazz Series at the Detroit Opera House

When asked “What is jazz?” Louis Armstrong replied, “Man, if you got to ask, you’ll never know.”

Those who know jazz and those who want to know should check out the Judith Ellis Jazz Series, Thursday evenings in the Cadillac Cafe at the Detroit Opera House.

The music is by Judith Ellis & The Third Beginning, featuring the legendary Wendell Harrison. Ms. Ellis is known for her knock-out vocals. Mr. Harrison is known for his reed play, especially clarinet and tenor saxophone. Depending on the evening, the ensemble also features top talents on guitar, keyboard, bass and drums. The show Thursday features two sets, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. There’s a $10 cover charge. This week, visit the website for a “Neighborhood Appreciation night” flyer that gives half-off admission plus one free cocktail. The Detroit Opera House is located at 1526 Broadway, Detroit, Michigan 48226. For the Cadillac Cafe, enter on the Madison Street side.

Mr. Armstrong said something else that people who know jazz can attest to: “What we play is life.”
