Summer is the perfect season for getting outdoors. It’s also the perfect time for getting into the arts and culture.
Over the coming months, young people in Southeast Michigan will enjoy the arts and culture in a number of summer camps and programs presented by members of the Cultural Alliance.
Summer camps and programs include (please click on the organization name to visit their web site for details):
• Arts & Scraps Workshops June-August on site, as well as programs that can be brought to you.
• Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Summer camps for youth and teens, grades Pre-school through High School, June through August.
• The Community House Many camp programs, from sports to the arts, for youngsters, throughout June to August.
• Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History Summer programs include Camp Africa, June and July, plus many opportunities for exploring history, heritage, the arts and sciences.
• Cranbrook Specialty Camps Music and arts camps at Cranbrook have long been a treasured part of the Schools’ programming and community outreach.
• Creative Arts Center Summer Confetti Camp activities include art, painting, ceramics, yoga, quilting and gardening, plus field trips and special events conducted by professional entertainers and educators.
• Detroit Public Library Summer Reading programs, July through mid-August.
• Eisenhower Dance Ensemble Summer Camps, July – August, at the EDE Center for Dance Rochester and EDE Center for Dance Birmingham.
• FAR Conservatory Camp FAR Out, a performance oriented day camp for children and adults with special needs ages 3-20.
• Full Impact Theater Formerly Michigan Youth Theatre, classes focus on Shakespeare, culminating in performances of “King Lear.”
• Grosse Pointe Theatre The Youth On Stage Summer Camp covers the dramatic arts from performance and writing to stage and costume design, lighting, sound and the technical side of production.
• Huron Valley Council for the Arts Animation Camp plus programs introducing young artists, June and July.
• Macomb Center for the Performing Arts Summer workshops include drama, show choir, children’s chorus, and flute among others, June- August.
• Meadow Brook Hall Summer Writing Camps, a series of writing programs, are among the many activities and events for young people ages pre-school through high school.
• Michigan Opera Theatre The Michigan Opera Theatre presents a series of classes and workshops for ages 10-18 and 18 to adult.
• Paint Creek Center for the Arts Art education classes are offered in a variety of media for all ages and levels of experience.
• Pewabic Pottery Summer camps include week-long classes and programs for young people ages 6-18.
• Purple Rose Theatre Kid Purple is among the summer programs and workshops for students ages 9-12. Other programs include the Young Actors’ Academy in Grosse Pointe.
• Stagecrafters Youth Drama Camp and “1000 Hats Youth Improvisation” are among the programs that further youngsters’ interest and understanding of the performing arts.
• The Art Center Creativity Camp and summer classes for youth and adults include drawing, painting, clay, fiber and more.
• The Art Experience The community resource hosts workshops and programs for children and young adults to develop and sharpen artistic skills in a positive environment.
• Troy Historical Museum & Village Programs and activities include “Summer In Time” camp June to August.
• Wayne State University Interesting programs from the arts to the sciences begin in June and run through the end of August.
• Wild Swan Theater Camp DoYaWanna provides fun experiences where kids can feel safe and comfortable exploring the imaginative world of theater.
• Y-Arts Located at the Boll Family YMCA, these exciting camps cultivate creativity for young people under the tutelage of experienced professional artists

This summer, young people will explore creativity and broaden worldviews through a series of summer camps and programs presented by members of the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan. Led by professional artists, performers, scientists and educators, the special summer programs are designed for children ages 6-18 who love to perform, create and explore the worlds of art and culture.
In the summer programs, children and young adults will experience the stage and perform with professional dancers and actors, as well as explore the worlds of science, literature, and the arts with professional scientists, writers and artists. Youth will dance, perform, draw, write, learn and otherwise explore, create or enjoy the worlds of art and culture.
The summer camps and programs are presented by 25 member institutions of the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan. These participating institutions include many of the region’s leading performing arts organizations and stages, art galleries, museums and cultural institutions.

“Summer break can be much more than just a time for students to relax and enjoy the nice weather,” Maud Lyon, executive director of the Cultural Alliance of Southeast Michigan, said. “In southeastern Michigan, summer also is the perfect time for young people to expand their horizons. The arts and cultural institutions here can play a most stimulating role to expand the mind and strengthen the spirit.”
These Cultural Alliance members offer many ways for young people as young as 5 years of age to experiment with music, theatre, dance, history, science, literature through a full spectrum of workshops and camps.
