A new, online, crowd-funding source — power2give — supports nonprofit arts and cultural projects in SE Michigan.

Gifts made through the power2give.org program will help fund local nonprofits’ projects, plus they’ll come with a $60,000 kickoff matching grant!

CultureSource — a nonprofit arts and culture organization in SE Michigan — is bringing power2give here. The URL is: power2give.org/semichigan.

More than 30 local nonprofits have posted projects in need of funding on power2give, and they will all vie for part of a kick-off matching grant — $60,000 from the Ford Foundation. For every dollar given via power2give, the nonprofits will get a $1 match, until this grant runs out. This is an ongoing program, though, and other donors are encouraged to offer matching grants, too.

“This new program allows donors to give directly to local arts and cultural projects that inspire them, and to know exactly where their generous dollars are going,” says Maud Lyon, executive director of CultureSource. “With a matching grant, power2give program also helps donors’ dollars go further, and will help nonprofit arts and culture groups get much needed money for things on their wish lists.”

Projects seeking power2give funding include:

  • An updated web site for Arts & Scraps in Detroit
  • Fun lunchtime entertainment programs at the Virgil H. Carr Center in Detroit
  • New stage lights for Motor City Youth Theatre in Redford
  • Better stools for group seating at the Cranbrook Museum of Art in Bloomfield Hills
  • LED light bulbs for the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
  • A new van for the traveling Wild Swan Theater in Ann Arbor.

“Our nonprofits have so many wonderful ideas that need just a little bit of extra support to get off the ground — and that little bit of extra support will have a major impact on their ability to deliver their missions,” Lyon said.

Projects will range from $1,000-$10,000, and the groups have 90 days to reach their fundraising goals.

Southeastern Michigan is the 18th community in the national power2give movement. Launched in August 2011 by the Arts and Sciences Council of Charlotte-Mecklenberg (N.C.), power2give.org has raised $3.1M with more than 13,639 donations across 1,200 projects.
