Explore humanity through the arts of movement at Music Hall Center this holiday season with its 2017 December Dances Concert, Sea of Love. The Wayne State University department of dance presents its annual December Dance Concert, taking place Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8 and 9.
This year’s show promises to be a presentation of diverse and moving works encompassing many facets of the human experience, both past and present. Dance students have the pleasure of working with a variety of talented artists, including invited guests, esteemed faculty, and talented student choreographers.
The 2017 Allesee Guest Artist Repertory ensemble has had the pleasure of working with New York based choreographer Faye Discroll on her new piece, “Sea of Love.” Hailed by The New York Times as “…one of the most original talents on the contemporary dance scene,” Driscoll’s new work combines a mixture of tableaux, images, and physical states to produce a highly theatrical, at times comedic, and ultimately humanist perspective on contemporary life.
African Dance ensemble, To Sangana, will also be working with a guest choreographer (Arnaud Loubayi) and drummer (Mampouya). The work, entitled “Nozbe/Nsombe” takes audiences on a journey back in time, to a typical day in central Africa. The work explores the hunt, the marketplace, food preparation, and a high –energy dance competition.
In addition to the works by guest artists, the December Dance Concert will feature works by faculty including Meg Paul, Lisa Rose LaMarre Wilmot, RAS Mikey Courtney, Jarell Gordy, and students Isabella Brown, Kelsey Lewiski-Chism, and Molly Sute and Jake Rydell. It is certain to be an evening of beautiful and moving contemporary dance made only more enchanting under the roof of the stunning Music Hall.
