Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings(DCWS) will present some of history’s most beloved brass pieces in Four Centuries Fanfare, an all-brass program exploring the complexity of the instruments alongside their compelling histories. The performance will take place on Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m. at Kirk in the Hills (1340 W Long Lake Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302). DCWS core trumpeter and Western Michigan University professor, Robert White, will lead the performance offering further insight into the sound and symbolism these instruments represent.

Now in his second year as a DCWS core musician, Robert White will lead a group of Michigan’s finest brass players through several classics in Four Centuries Fanfare on Sunday, March 4.

“I wanted to span as much of the spectrum of history as I could,” said Robert White. “Brass instruments have symbolic values that are centuries old, and lots of music has been in dialogue with those values in some way or another.”

White will be joined by several prominent brass players from across Michigan for this performance featuring pieces including Ingolf Dahl’s Music for Brass Instruments, Shostakovich’s Concertino and Samuel Scheidt’s Centone. DCWS will also be performing a piece by its Composer-in-Residence, Jessica Hunt, titled Colloquy.

“I am especially looking forward to performing [Hunt’s] piece, but I absolutely love them all,” said White. “This performance will give audiences a vivid listening experience that at times will be as thrilling as a roller coaster and others as serene as a walk in the woods. I want audiences to recall those experiences vividly in the time that follows and come back repeatedly for more performances!”

Prior to the performance, Accent Pontiac, a local during and after-school music program utilizing music for social change, will present its Intermediate Brass Band and Performance Bucket Band during DCWS’ Concert Preview beginning
at 2:15 p.m.
