The audience shapes the stories when UnTheatre Co presents “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” at Planet Ant Theatre in Hamtramck. The original neo-futurist production debuts Friday, Jan. 11 with performances on select dates through Saturday, Jan. 26.

Details from UnTheatre Co:

Originally conceived and produced by creator Greg Allen, “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” is the show that begat the movement now referred to as Neo-Futurism. It has been performed in various cities in the United States as well as several countries throughout Europe and, after all those thousands of performances over all those years, there have never been two performances that were the same.

Performances will run on Fridays at 10 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and will take place at Planet Ant Black Box, located at 2357 Caniff St.  in Hamtramck. There will be one late-night performance of crowd favorite, the Durrty 30 on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 p.m. and a new option of a Sunday 6 p.m. show on Jan. 20.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 plus the resulting number of the roll of a 6-sided die, or online for $21 with the resulting number of the roll of a 6-sided die being returned to you at the door. Additional discounts include $5 off for students, $3 off for groups of 10 or more and $2 off for Seniors, First Responders/Military and for Union members.  All discounts are applied as cash back at the door.  The Durrty 30 remains, as always, the roll of a 10-sided die only – or $11 online with the roll of the die refunded at the door.

Now midway through their second season, UnTheatre Co is being appreciated by audiences as “thought provoking”, “refreshing”, “cheeky”, “lively” and “a welcome deviation from mainstream theatre”.  With a new menu every week and the audience in charge of the order of the performance it’s impossible to see the same show twice which has audiences coming back again and again.  UnSemble members write, direct, and perform their own original plays. Each play is delineated by a simple “Go” to begin and “Curtain” to end it, and the audience chooses the order of the plays based on a menu of numbered titles. At each performance, a six-sided die is rolled to decide how many plays will be replaced for the following weekend of performances.

Founder and Producer Christina Killmar had this to say about returning to Planet Ant, “It is such a fantastic venue.  We love the work they are doing and are thrilled to be invited back to perform in their Black Box space.  Many of our newest performers are Planet Ant trained and they’ve done an incredible job.”

The “UnSemble” is comprised of performance artists and writers from all over the Southeast Michigan area.  The cast of each weekend changes every week and is shared on UnTheatre Co’s social media accounts.

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind promises to be “UnLike Anything You’ve Ever Seen in Detroit.”
