Works of deepest symbolic and spiritual meaning from Australia now stand in the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. The Inside World: Contemporary Aboriginal Australian Memorial Poles” features 94 beautifully designed works from the Debra and Dennis Scholl Collection of Miami, Fla.

The pieces are intricately carved and exquisitely illustrated poles, created by 49 artists from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. Each pole symbolizes and details the final form of one individual human spirit — the person’s unique monde intérieur — as the human soul embarks on its transition from the labyrinthine material world to reunification as one with the spirit world.

The exhibit runs through Sunday, Dec. 29 at The Wright. Click here for more information.
