Join the Detroit Historical Society and Digital Diaspora Family Reunion for a special outdoor premiere and sneak peek of Family Pictures USA, a new television show airing on PBS this August. The program and screening are from 7-11 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at the Detroit Historical Museum.
This event is free and open to the public, but reservations are encouraged. Click here for tickets.
The special screening includes portions of episodes filmed in Detroit, Southwest Florida, and North Carolina, featuring the local families who shared their family stories with us in Summer 2017. Friday’s agenda:
- 7 pm: Explore the Detroit Historical Museum, with opportunities to share your family stories and enjoy food for sale.
- 8:30 pm: Formal program begins. Mark S. Lee, founder, president & CEO of the LEE Group and host of “Small Talk with Mark S. Lee” & “In the Conference Room with Mark S. Lee,” will lead a conversation with show creators Thomas Allen Harris and Don Perry along with community members featured in the series.
- 9:30 pm: The film will start after dark (around 9:30 pm) on the south facing wall of the Detroit Historical Museum’s Legends Plaza (the corner of Woodward Ave & Kirby St.)
Family Pictures USA is a television series & multimedia project that explores neighborhoods & cities through the lens of the family photo album. Hosted by Thomas Allen Harris, this public television series enlarges our understanding of history, our diversity and our shared values.
This partnership was formed in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of July 1967 in Detroit and the Detroit Historical Society’s Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward community engagement initiative. Family Pictures USA invites viewers to share their own images and stories, which will be aggregated across social media and posted to the Digital American Family Album.
