Explore Detroit’s contributions to the world of jazz through the music and the stories with John Penney and “Jazz City.” The program debuts on WRCJ 90.9 FM at 7 p.m. this week. Catch broadcasts Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 9 p.m.
The 13-part series details Detroit’s important role in the development of America’s original musical form. Hosted by jazz historian and WRCJ host John Penney, each one-hour episode will discuss the music and contributions of jazz pioneers such as McKinney’s Cotton Pickers – to artists from the 1940s to the 1970s, when nearly every major jazz recording featured a player from Detroit — to today’s stars such as Regina Carter and Xavier Davis. Themes will include “pioneers,” “teachers and mentors,” “women in jazz,” “jazz inside Motown” and much more.
Funding for the series is provided in part by Carole Ann and Alexander Nakeff.
