Yayoi Kusama creates spaces that take viewers out of this world. The Japanese artist calls them “Infinity Rooms.” They stand among the most popular installations in contemporary art.

Her “Fireflies on the Water” currently is on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. The work is so popular, visitors must register ahead of time and are given a 60-second pass to stand on what seems the edge of a lakeside dock, surrounded by a world filled with fireflies, reflected off the water and mirrors that form the installation’s walls. The effect is other worldly.

Although it is currently closed to the public due to the national emergency, we can enjoy the artist’s work online. “The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away,” on exhibit at The Broad Museum, a contemporary art institution based in Los Angeles, has been made available to us online.
